UN Security Council to hold first talks on AI risks

The United Nations Security Council is set to host its inaugural formal discussion on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI) this week in New York. The meeting, chaired by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, aims to foster an international dialogue regarding the impact of AI on global peace and security. With AI technology holding the potential to reshape the global economy and alter the landscape of international security, governments worldwide are actively considering measures to address the associated risks.

As part of its ongoing efforts to assume a leadership role in AI regulation, the United Kingdom, currently holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, seeks to engage in discussions and collaborative efforts on a global scale. In line with this objective, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres previously expressed support for the establishment of an international AI watchdog body, drawing parallels to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
